Also known as ERCP, this procedure allows the study of conditions affecting the bile ducts and provides a way to treat them without the need for surgery. This procedure can only be performed in a fluoroscopy room using a special endoscope (duodenoscope) and with the aid of tools used to extract tissues or stones, or to introduce stents or prothesis into the bile duct. In some cases, gallstones may remain inside the bile duct even after the gallbladder has been surgically removed; an ERCP is an ideal alternative to a second surgery, providing an endoscopic solution with short recovery time.
